A wholesale transformation of the global financial markets has taken place during the past year, with a raft of global banks collapsing, or being nationalised or recapitalised under government instruction. Managing liquidity effectively - always crucial in banking - became the difference between survival and success. Even many of those institutions that performed relatively well were forced to deleverage and remove risk wherever possible.
