Dealers bullish on upcoming offshore CGB futures relaunch

Better contracts and deeper foreign interest in China bonds set to spur uptake, but launch date unclear

While a launch date for the new offshore Chinese government bond (CGB) futures is yet to be announced, dealers say the updated contract is more likely to find traction in the market than did the original.

The Hong Kong Exchange launched five-year CGB futures in 2017, but the product was withdrawn after four months of trading. There is no official confirmation of why the scheme was aborted, but market participants attributed it to a lack of unanimous approval from regulators, as well as limited
