Rate of centrally cleared CDSs hits record high

Multi-name products drove increase in first half of 2021

The share of credit default swap (CDS) contracts cleared by central counterparties (CCPs) hit a fresh record of 64% in the first half of the year, figures from the Bank for International Settlements show.

Notional amounts of cleared CDSs have risen 8% – or $393 billion – to $5.6 trillion since end-2020. Over the same period, notionals of non-cleared CDSs went up 2% – or $60 billion – to $3.2 trillion.
