Peripheral EU banks free encumbered assets

Ratio of encumbered assets to total assets at Greek banks falls to 23.9% from 31.6%

Banks in countries afflicted by the eurozone crisis drastically reduced the share of their assets tied up as collateral for swaps, repos and central bank funding in 2018.

The ratio of encumbered assets to total assets across the European Union was 27.9%, or €10.7 trillion ($11.8 trillion), European Banking Authority (EBA) data shows. The ratio was flat year-on-year, but up from 26.6% in 2016 and 25.6% in 2015.

However, Greek, Irish, Portuguese and Spanish banks saw their ratios drop
