French minister to replace McCreevy

Former French foreign minister Michel Barnier is to take over from Charlie McCreevy as internal market and services commissioner in the next European Commission, from January 2010. Barnier served as European commissioner for regional policy between 1999 and 2004 before becoming French foreign minister and later minister for agriculture and fisheries. He left the French government in June this year after being elected to the European parliament. Barnier will be responsible for pushing forward
