Bank supervision: lessons from the post-2008 banking crisis

Jeremy Quick

  • An examination of public third-party reports on the failure of specific banks since 2008
  • Focuses on the quality of front-line bank supervision by regulators
  • Highlights 12 common failure factors
  • Notes absence of continuing public assurance on most of the 12 common failure factors

This paper considers the learning points from official third-party reports produced in the wake of supervisory failures that can be applied to the management of front-line bank supervisors. The period covered is mostly during and after the recent banking crisis starting in 2008. While each third-party case study is unique, 12 generic factors relating to front-line supervisory failures emerge.
