Whether in his first job as a part-time electrician during school holidays, or in his present role as co-founder and chief executive officer of online fixed-income trading network Thomson TradeWeb, Jim Toffey has displayed a passion for invention.

Until 1998, Toffey ran the fixed-income e-commerce business at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he says he realised that "buy-side clients wanted a one-stop solution where they could trade with all dealers across all securities." So he settled down
