Shortage of underlyings is stunting development of renminbi products, say providers

Market participants say a lack of renminbi-denominated underlyings is slowing down the development of renminbi-denominated equity-linked products

While fixed-income products have gone from strength to strength since the lifting of restrictions on the free flow of the Chinese currency in Hong Kong, the lack of renminbi-denominated underlyings in the market is limiting the volume of equity-linked products available.

"There is a very strong trend, especially in Hong Kong, towards accumulation of renminbi savings, and there has been development of the renminbi structured products market on the fixed-income side, but we're still waiting to see
