Germany’s hedge fund market so far hasn’t performed to script. A change in regulations in January 2004 made it possible for hedge funds to set up shop in Germany, while the country’s institutional investors are now finally able to invest in hedge funds without paying punitive capital gains taxes. Cue massive inflows of cash and a burgeoning domestic hedge fund market. Only it hasn’t worked out that way.
