Having worked in asset management, private equity and investment banking, John Sullivan felt that setting up a hedge fund was the natural next step. But co-founding a hedge fund with Myra Tabor and Paul Hollowday, with whom Sullivan had run a special investments group at Royal Bank of Scotland, was no walk in the park.

Early last year, Sullivan, Tabor, Hollowday and two other members of the RBS special investments group set up a hedge fund called Cognis Capital, which invests in sub-investment
