The US wireless sector caught the attention of the marketplace in February with the announcement that Cingular is set to acquire AT&T Wireless to create a company that would compete in size with Verizon, which serves 37.5 million customers in the United States. In addition to consolidation, wireless companies are having to contend with changing dynamics within the industry itself, such as the recent introduction of the new local number portability rules.
