Japanese hedge funds have proliferated since local licensing restrictions were relaxed following Japan's 'Big Bang' reforms of 1998. In particular, the requirement for fund managers to be licensed by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) was relaxed after December 1, 1998. Since then, managers have had to register with the Financial Supervisory Agency, the MoF's successor, a process that eased many restrictions and cumbersome procedures under the old regime.
