Bucking the trend

Ranjit Ajit Singh, managing director of the Securities Commission of Malaysia and Iosco chairman, is a rarity among financial supervisors: he favours market deregulation and the use of more risk management tools such as derivatives. Harry Thompson reports

It’s unusual these days to hear a senior regulator extolling the virtues of derivatives and pondering how to best develop more trading activity in this area. But that is one of the many things on the mind of Ranjit Ajit Singh, the ex-university lecturer turned regulator, who is responsible for overseeing the development and supervision of the Malaysian capital markets as managing director of the country’s Securities Commission (SC).
