Algorithmic trading’s next frontier

Cash equity dealers have used algorithmic trading techniques for years to electronically process large customer orders. Now, due to the growing trend towards electronic equity options trading, sophisticated dealers are applying algorithmic trading to derivatives.

The International Securities Exchange (ISE), a six-year-old electronic equity options market based in New York, estimated in February that it now handles 27% of the US’s exchange-traded equity options. According to ISE, this makes it the country’s largest equity options market – just ahead of its nearest rival, the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).

Dealers say the basis for this growth is the ISE’s tight spreads. The ISE claims that for option premiums between $3 and $10, its spreads
