Airlines face 82-million tonne shortfall of carbon allowances in 2012

The commercial airline sector will have to buy 82 million tonnes of carbon allowances next year in addition to free allowances, according to an aviation consultancy

The European Commission (EC) yesterday published the benchmark that allows airlines to work out how many allowances they will get for free on joining the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) in January 2012.

This benchmark implies that the commercial airline sector globally faces an 82-million tonne shortfall in carbon dioxide (CO2) allowances in 2012, according to Thomson Reuters Point Carbon and consultancy RDC Aviation. The sector will have to buy CO2 allowances at market
