EPA finding could lead to GHG regulation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today issued a proposed finding that greenhouse gases contribute to air pollution that may endanger public health or welfare.

If the proposed finding is upheld after a public comment period, it would allow the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. However, regulations have not been detailed in the proposal.

It identified six gases that pose a potential threat: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. According to scientific analysis commissioned by the EPA, concentrations of these gases are at unprecedented levels as a result of human
