Power traders slam Spain’s mooted plant closure rules

Tougher closure criteria would distort power prices and harm functioning of the market, say traders

Power traders have decried a proposal in Spain that would make it harder for generators to shut unprofitable plants, warning the measure would distort wholesale and retail electricity prices and dampen the signals that drive adjustments in generation and trigger investment.

In a statement on March 12, Spain’s energy minister Álvaro Nadal said the ruling People’s Party would present a bill in parliament “in the coming days” introducing two additional conditions a plant has to meet to be allowed
