Coal makes a mark

The head of Alstom's power division, Phillipe Joubert, has claimed that market trends in new equipment orders indicate a global shift towards coal-fired power generation. Of 120GW of new power orders, 20%-30% are for gas-fired generation and 30%-40% are for coal-fired generation.

For the most part, this shift will be driven by increased plant build in Asia, where natural gas is not readily available. Joubert indicates that, on average, 50%-60% of new plants will be built in Asia (including India)
