Trading activity in the European financial coal markets has surged in the last few years, spurred in large part by dramatic changes in physical supply and demand and unexpected price volatility. Trading volumes in European swaps rose eight-fold in the years from 2001 to 2004 and, if the current trend persists, the present 800 million metric tonnes traded annually will double within three to five years.
