Trichet still best bet for ECB job

Imagine the European Central Bank adrift come July: its would-be captain still entangled in a legal suit and EU leaders unable to agree on an alternative successor to Wim Duisenberg.

The odds are good that Bank of France governor Jean-Claude Trichet will eventually be cleared of charges of complicity in the alleged doctoring of Credit Lyonnais accounts a decade ago when he was French Treasury director. But a court ruling is not due until June 18, barely three weeks before Duisenberg’s planned
