BIS opens representative office in Mexico

The establishment of a base in Mexico is aimed at fostering closer relations and co-operation between the BIS and central banks and monetary authorities in the Americas. BIS general manager, Andrew Crockett, said monetary and financial stability were major concerns in the region, especially in Latin America.

The office, headed by Gregor Heinrich, will have four staff and plans to improve the exchange of information and data in the region as well as co-ordinating meetings and seminars.

The BIS, whose secretariat is based in Basel, Switzerland, already has a representative office in Hong Kong. This office, which covers Asia and the Pacific, was opened in 1998.
