As the axe fell on a series of major names and an assorted collection of less well-renowned banking brands since the advent of the credit crunch, insurance practitioners could take comfort from the sector’s – relatively – much better performance. After all, AIG’s fall from grace was predicated on its ill-advised foray into credit default swaps, and the travails of Aegon and ING can be attributed – in part – to their financial services division, rather than the activities of their insurance arms.
