There was a time, during the 1970s, when a stroll along the corridors of the economics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was likely to have resulted in an encounter with a current or future luminary of finance: Robert Merton, Franco Modigliani or Paul Samuelson, to name but a few. Between them, this cohort of MIT professors and their students came to define much of what we now view as modern financial theory.
