Argyris Kahros

Argyris Kahros is a Financial Sector Expert in the Monetary and Capital Markets (MCM) Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His area of expertise is financial market infrastructures (FMI), with a focus on central counterparties (CCP). Since joining the IMF in 2021 he has led missions on developing post-trade infrastructure and aiding countries in their exploration of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). He has also conducted detailed assessments of FMIs against the Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures (PFMI) in the context of the IMF’s Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), as well as organized and provided lectures for workshops on CBDC and the PFMI. Argyris has also been active in international fora, where he has worked on global efforts to improve cross-border payments, reviewing margin practices in derivatives markets, access to central clearing, and CCP stress testing exercises and framework development. Prior to joining the IMF, Argyris was a Senior Oversight Expert at the European Central Bank (ECB). Over the seven years that he was at the ECB, he worked on a variety of FMI-related analytical projects, including developing agent-based model simulations of payment systems, and quantifying the liquidity impact on clearing members of CCPs following possible regulation-induced market fragmentation due to Brexit. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles.
