ACLI: self-regulation “not an option” for life settlements

The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) has responded strongly to criticism of its call early in February for the banning of life settlements in the US market.

Life settlements are securitisations of ongoing life policies purchased from individuals. They have become notorious because of perceived similarity to so-called stranger originated life insurance (Stoli), illegal in much of the US, where the aged are persuaded to put an investor as a beneficiary of their life policy.
