The Forbes 400, the magazine's list of the wealthiest people in the United States, is studded with men who made their fortunes in alternative investments. Fifty-one men (no women) of the richest 400 made their money in alternatives. Carl Icahn, once a feared corporate raider who now attacks companies through his hedge fund Icahn Enterprises, is number 18, with a $14.5bn fortune. George Soros, who some consider a traitor to his class for funding liberal causes, is number 33, with $8.8bn.
