Opportunities in 2009 in equities and bonds

Contrary to popular market sentiment, there are outstanding opportunities in equities in the foreseeable future. This is the view of Nigel Blanshard, portfolio manager and founder of London based fund of hedge funds Culross Global Management.

He said there will be a golden moment in 2009 for the remaining hedge fund managers that have alpha identification ability in equities because a protracted period favourable to value equity investing has begun.

His comments were given at a seminar looking at alterative investment themes for 2009.

Blanshard said equities will remain overlooked and "despised" as people will not buy them. He expected them to "become very cheap".

The current spreads on bonds are providing opportunities, said Blanshard
