On the back of every portable music player sold by Apple are engraved eight words: "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China" Such words are at the very heart of the investment case for China and China-related securities.

Eight out of China's 10 biggest exporters by value last year were technology companies, but technology is just one example.

China already produces 20% of the world's clothing, and this is projected to rise to as much as 40% as Western companies see the cost advantage
