With the bulk of PR engaged in providing a supporting hand for listed firms' share prices, it is little wonder a shorting hedge fund is seen as the enemy - by those PR and by the press that feeds off them, says Dawnay, Day Olympia's CEO, Ian Morley

When England lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland, in a football match, the manager Sven Goran Eriksson was castigated, derided and demonised by the bulk of the British press.

At first sight, it would seem that hedge funds get similar treatment with fear and just plain ignorance added in for good measure. Why is this the case?

The reasons, I think, are relatively straightforward. At the outset, let's make a clear distinction between the trade press and the general press.

The trade press is generally well
