Managers concerned that Japanese economic rally might run out of gas

Deflationary worries and lack of market visibility has left many managers of Japanese long/short funds in a state of uncertainty about whether recovery in Japan will be sustained. Consequently, many managers are taking defensive positions until they see which direction the market turns.

The country has been experiencing economic recovery for the past 18 months, but the market did not fully realise it until summer 2003, according to John Paul Temperley, co-manager of New Star Asset Management'
