Risk officers can sometimes be criticised for lacking direct business experience or for not having sufficient influence to sway decisions needed to ward off excesses. But it would be hard to make such charges hold against James Sheu, chief risk officer (CRO) at Taiwan’s Chinatrust Financial Holding.

Sheu worked as Chinatrust’s group president between June 2006 and March 2008 and sat on the group’s board, so he recasts the traditional image of risk management as primarily a middle-office function
