Japanese CDOs suffer only modest fall

The collateralised debt obligation (CDO) market in Japan last year contracted by 12% to around Yen1 trillion ($10.2 billion) by volume, as rated by Moody's Investors Service.

The agency rated nine balance sheet CDOs and 26 arbitrage deals last year, according to a report, 2008 Japanese CDO Market Review and 2009 Outlook, released in March.

The balance sheet deals totalled Yen729 billion, up 6.9% on the similar figure in 2007 due to an increase in the size of portfolios referencing loans to small
