Airing a new scheme
The policy framework put forward in September for New Zealand's emissions trading scheme makes it the most ambitious and stringent scheme yet proposed worldwide, but there are concerns over implementation, finds Roderick Bruce
New Zealand's carbon emissions output is growing at a startling rate. While the country's annual emissions of around 80 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent represent less than 1% of the global total, New Zealand has the 12th highest per capita emissions level globally, due to reliance on private transport and emissions-intensive industries.
