Well, it wasn't too difficult to see what was best avoided in 2007 - anything long sub-prime, or stocks that smacked of having their fortunes even vaguely tied to those taking out mortgages in the US. Indeed, hopefully your chosen hedge fund manager did just that, or even better, shorted US housing over the summer months.
