Risk 2002 Europe: BarCap head says Enron hires nearly integrated

Barclays Bank’s investment banking unit, Barclays Capital, plans to launch a fully integrated commodities risk management and financing service following its energy hiring spree during the past three months.

“We have hired much of Enron’s Europe and UK team and should have the infrastructure and technology live in June or July,” Robert Diamond, chief executive of Barclays Capital, told delegates at Risk Europe 2001 today.

Barclays already has a separate commodities unit, but Diamond said this has traditionally concentrated on physical trading, rather than integrating corporate lending and derivatives services.

“We plan to be a leading [commodities] firm in Europe and the UK,” said Diamond.
